Peonies Print E-mail

We offer many different forms of peony.  It is important to note that most of these are not the commonly found garden peony most people think of when peonies are mentioned. We offer rare and hard to find species of peonies for both sun and shade gardens.

                                                                           Paeonia x 'Bartzella' in Garden

We were first introduced to species peonies when we purchased a Paeonia obovata about fifteen years ago. This peony known as the Japanese Woodland Peony is a shade perennial that blooms with single light pink flowers in late May. The showiest part of this peony is the seedhead that opens in September. After flowering the green seedpod is formed and develops throughout the summer, it splits open to reveal blue fertile seeds surrounded by bright red receptacles. In the early fall the seedpod colors of green, blue and red are not to be missed.

                                               Paeonia tenuifolia 'Rubra Plena'

As time has passed we have been able to acquire many more species peonies for our garden. Most of these bloom in late spring. One of our favorites is Paeonia tenuifolia, the fernleaf peony. This species has delicate lacy foliage that is highlighted with dark red blooms. We had the oppurtunity last fall to purchase small plants of this great species to carry in the nursery and we also divided one of our clumps. Also last fall, we added seven other species peonies to the sales yard.

Have you heard about the new Itoh or intersectional peonies? These are crosses of the herbaceous peony and the tree peony. We were given one of these ten years ago, it was planted in our sun garden and much admired. About five falls ago, two varieties were available for the first time at a reasonable price, so we brought some in, to offer to our customers. These have been offered by other nurseries for more than a hundred dollars, we will be able to offer these for nearly half of that price. This year we will offer a half dozen different selections of these great  Itoh peonies!
