We love Daphnes, so we try to
carry as many varieties as we can get our hands on. The staples of Daphne
cneorum, D. ‘Carol Mackie’ and D. ‘Brigg’s Moonlight’ are available throughout
the year. In early spring, we will have D. genkwa (in three forms), D. retusa,
D. mezereum, D. x ‘Lawerence Crocker’ and D. x transatlantica ‘Beulah Cross’ and
with any luck a few more varieties as well. There is a great new book on
Daphnes by Robin White, appropriately titled “Daphnes, A Practical Guide for
Gardeners”. This book was just published by Timber Press and my copy
arrived two days ago. Amazingly, I opened the book jacket to this concise
statement on Daphnes. Robin White says, “The scent of a daphne alone is enough
to stop passers-by in their tracks. Add to this exquisite flowers in a range of
creams, pinks, and lilacs, fine leaves, often with striking variegation, and it
is a little surprise that discerning gardeners are rarely without at least one
daphne in their collection”. Stop in to pick out a daphne of your own. You’ll
be glad you did!
